More than 150 community college students around the state were selected to attend a Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) leadership conference.
The students met in the Santa Cruz area for the MESA Student Leadership Retreat last month, and were chosen based on their leadership potential.
The event included field experiments handling chemistry and engineering design, industry speakers and hands-on breakout sessions.
Held at the Happy Valley Conference Center in Santa Cruz April 13-15, the retreat is a chance for community college students to interact, network and build leadership skills.
Presenters from Genentech, Oracle, NASA and the Society of Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) spoke to students. The Hispanic College Fund partially funded the event.
MESA students from the following schools attended: Allan Hancock College, American River College, Bakersfield College, Butte College, Cabrillo College, Canada College, College of the Sequoias, College of the Siskiyous, Contra Costa College, El Camino College, Mission College, Napa Valley College, Rio Hondo College, Sacramento City College, San Joaquin Delta College, Santa Ana College, Skyline College, Solano College, Woodland College and Yuba College.
MESA is an award-winning academic enrichment program that provides educationally disadvantaged students with the tools to earn bachelor’s degrees in math-based fields. With tutoring, mentoring, study sessions, transfer counseling and study centers, MESA provides an environment that allows students to succeed and navigate the transfer system more easily.
MESA has programs in more than 30 community colleges in California. One hundred percent of MESA students who go to four-year college as math-based majors.
