Press Release

More than 60 MESA students from around the state will get some extra help earning a four-year degree thanks to a scholarship for transfer students.

The National Science Foundation Scholarship is awarded by MESA to assist students who will transfer to a four-year college and earn a math-based degree.

Students who have completed their first year of community college receive up to $12,500 over a four-year period and transfer-ready students receive up to $10,500 over a three-year period. Students are awarded based on academic performance, leadership, MESA involvement and financial need. All of the students are transferring to 4-year colleges or universities that also have a MESA program.

The following MESA community college centers had students that were awarded the NSF S-STEM Scholarship: Allan Hancock, Canada, East Los Angeles, El Camino, Los Medanos, Mendocino, Napa Valley, Pasadena City, Rio Hondo, Sacramento City, San Diego City, San Joaquin Delta, Santa Barbara City, Santa Rosa Junior, Skyline, Ventura and Yuba Colleges, City College of San Francisco, College of the Sequoias and College of the Siskiyous.

MESA is an award-winning academic enrichment program that provides educationally disadvantaged students with the tools to earn bachelor’s degrees in math-based fields. With tutoring and mentoring, extra study sessions, transfer counseling and study centers, MESA provides an environment that allows students to succeed in math and science and navigate the transfer system more easily.

Ninety-nine percent of MESA community college students who transfer to four-year institutions pursue STEM majors.
