MESA Named Top in Country by Bayer
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 19, 2010
The Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program was evaluated as one of the top programs in the country that prepare K-12 girls and minorities so they excel in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) studies.
For the second time in a row Bayer has named the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program in its Compendium of Best Practice K-12 STEM Education Programs. Bayer highlights programs that effectively educate girls and minority students in STEM fields.
MESA is a statewide academic preparation program that serves more than 20,000 K-12, community college and 4-year college students each year who are educationally disadvantaged. MESA’s goal is to get these students interested in math, science and engineering and prepare them academically so they graduate with degrees in those fields.
Seventy percent of MESA high school graduates statewide went directly to college after graduation compared to 48 percent of all California graduates. Sixty percent of MESA students go on to math, science or engineering majors.
Now celebrating its 40th anniversary, MESA is one of the largest programs in the state to support educationally disadvantaged students so they can graduate from college with science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) degrees.
