Press Release

MESA student-teams across the state vied for bragging rights in the program’s annual Math Challenge.

Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) conducted the 60-minute test that is modeled after the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year College’s Student Math League test. Almost 190 MESA students in teams of five or more participated from 21 MESA community college campuses.

The top three schools are College of the Desert, East Los Angeles College and San Joaquin Delta College.

The top schools will receive a plaque for the achievement. Top students statewide are also recognized. The goal is to expand the contest to more MESA community college centers each year and build a healthy level of competition between campuses to maintain or gain the title.

“MESA developed the Math Challenge to help students improve their problem solving skills and learn to alleviate test preparation stress,” said Juanita Muniz-Torres, MESA Director of Programs. “It gives them the confidence to perform at their best in future exams.”

MESA is an award-winning academic enrichment program that provides educationally disadvantaged students with the tools to earn bachelor’s degrees in math-based fields. With tutoring, mentoring, study sessions, transfer counseling and study centers, MESA provides an environment that allows students to succeed and navigate the transfer system more easily.

MESA has programs in 38 community colleges. Ninety-seven percent of MESA students who transfer to four-year colleges attend as math-based majors.
