MEP assists university students enrolled in colleges of engineering
and computer science so they will successfully attain their baccalaureates.
The program offers a wide array of academic support as well as exposure
to different careers available to engineering and computer science
graduates. Industry representatives who sit on Advisory Boards support
and advance the program. They serve as important resources for students
through offering career advice, providing internships and scholarships,
and introducing students to skills required within the corporate
culture.
The main components of the MEP include:
- Academic Excellence Workshops. Students are scheduled
in the same core math and science classes and taught how to maintain
high academic outcomes through group study.
- Clustering. MESA students are grouped together in the
same course sections of core math and science classes and are
taught how to study and review the material more effectively as
a group.
- Orientation course. The class teaches college survival
skills to incoming students majoring in engineering or computer
science.
- Career advising. Students learn specifics about different
engineering fields. Industry mentors, job shadowing, career fairs,
internships opportunities and field trips to companies are provided.
- Links with student and professional organizations. These
resources provide mentors, guest speakers and tours of companies.
- Professional development workshops. Students participate
in mock job fairs, learn resume preparation and interview skills
and how to find part-time, full-time and summer employment.
- Industry Advisory Board. Corporate representatives, including
many MESA alumni, participate on the board and provide scholarships,
strategic planning, special summer internships, field trips and
other resources. The board serves as a valuable connection between
students and companies who need technical professionals.
- Student Study Center. This dedicated multipurpose space
is used for study, workshops and information sharing.
