CSU Chico is in the top 20 “Best Colleges for Minorities in STEM,” according to Forbes Magazine, and MESA is a main reason for the ranking. “I attribute much of the success in recruiting and graduating minority students in engineering, computer science and construction management (ECC) to our MESA program,” said Chico ECC Dean Mike Ward. “MESA has been instrumental in recruiting good students, retaining them with financial and academic assistance and thereby helping educationally disadvantaged students become successful graduates of the college.” Researchers evaluated 400 schools in Forbes’ ranking of “America’s Best Colleges” to find the schools in which the population of STEM classrooms most closely mirrored the population of the entire school. Only one other school in California was ranked— Westmont College in Santa Barbara. The ranking was published in a December 2010 edition of the magazine.
