Fall 2010/Winter 2011
More than 150 MESA engineering and computer science major students from across the state will attend the seventh annual Student Leadership Conference in October.
Focusing on the theme “Connecting Talent—Creating Leaders,” the students will be invited to develop leadership skills through workshops, interaction with technical professionals, mock interviews and an alumni panel during the two-day conference.
PG&E President Chris Johns is the MESA Champion Award winner this year and will be recognized at the event.
More than 40 incoming freshmen MESA engineering students took a 2-week math boot camp to prepare for calculus 1.
Students review trigonometry and tackle the first three chapters of calculus, which is taught by instructors who follow the CSU Fresno calculus course outline.Student progress in calculus will be tracked during the semester. Students who took the camp last year passed calculus at a higher rate than the rest ofthe campus.
“If a student feels confident about the materials it leads to them doing well in the first exam,” said Hernan Maldonado of the CSU Fresno MESA center. “That leads to continued success and because math builds upon itself, you do well in the course after having that foundation.”
Cañada college received a two-year $150,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to provide online resources for community colleges that do not have engineering programs. The goal is to increase the number of engineering graduates in California. MESA will identify community colleges that could benefit from the grant and partner with them to develop online services through a California Community College video conferencing platform. Students will then have access to coursework that would not be available on their campuses, or has previously been cut.
