Winter/Spring 2009
In the midst of one of the gravest economic down turns in decades, it is gratifying that MESA continues to receive new funding from corporate sources.
Bayer and Verizon, as well as the San Francisco Foundation, are the latest funders who recently awarded MESA with new grants (see "DURING TOUGH TIMES"). These funds reflect more than a generosity of spirit from their sources. They indicate a recognition that MESA produces a good return on their investment.
MESA's proven ability to successfully help students achieve in math and science is why MESA continues to attract the support of companies and foundations in these hard economic times.
Funders, impacted by today's tough climate, often have fewer dollars to award and must decide which programs will produce the best return for their investment. Under this criterion, MESA comes out ahead. The charts and figures on page 3 prove the success of MESA's model of academic achievement.
The demand for science, technology, engineering and math professionals continues to climb as economic, education and demographic projections indicate a continued decrease in these graduates. Companies realize that despite the current downturn, they need to invest in programs like MESA so they can stay competitive in the future.
We are grateful to our industry—and government—supporters. We have great optimism for the continued well-being of our state. And we are proud to be doing our part to ensure California's ongoing growth.
