A scholarship fund has been established to honor a MESA alum who was tragically gunned down last September in a case of mistaken identity.
Rod Rodriguez, Jr., a student at UC Berkeley, was the first in his family to attend college. He was a recipient of the prestigious Frank H. & Eva H. Buck Foundation Scholarship, which would have paid for his entire college tuition and expenses through 2015. Rodriguez was a finalist for the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, Schwab Rosenhouse Memorial Scholarship, Ronald McDonald House Charities Grant and the MetroPCS Community Scholar Award. He tutored students in Oakland and on campus during his spare time.
Rodriguez's family attributes his involvement with MESA and the encouragement of his high school MESA advisor Jean Crowder (now director of the Sacramento State University-UC Davis MESA Center) as key to his going on to college. Contributions to the Rod Rodriguez, Jr. scholarship fund may be made through a special website at www.tributetorod.org, or to:
