CSULA's promotion of engineering and science through its MESA Engineering Program (MEP) was honored this fall by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ABET), the national accreditation organization for engineering education.
CSULA's College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology was presented with the ABET President's Award for this achievement.
This award was given to the campus for its "previous and ongoing promotion of MESA, including sharing procedures and techniques with a broader audience, in promotion of math, engineering, and science among underrepresented groups," according to ABET.
"For over 25 years, we have taken a leading role in "Transforming Dreams into Reality" as a result of our commitment to creating the diverse technical workforce through our undergraduate and graduate programs," said Keith H. Moo-Young, Dean of the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology.
"Our current tagline…has been the mantra of the college since we developed an MEP program in 1982 … to take underrepresented minority students from low income backgrounds to achieve self-actualization through the awarding of their bachelors and master degrees," said Moo-Young.
The campus MEP supports over 400 engineering and computer science majors from disadvantaged and underrepresented groups. CSULA also operates a MESA Schools Program serving over 500 students in the Los Angeles, San Gabriel and Pasadena unified school districts.
